Android or iOS - the best platform to build your first App?

Five billion will be the number of mobile phone users by 2020 it is estimated. This is a big part of the audience to ignore. It becomes imperative then to build an App for every business owner. Once you decide to build the App, there is another hurdle to cross.

iOS or Android, which is the best platform to build on first?

You can well say both, but there are a few things to consider. Hiring two different teams for development in two different platforms is going to cost dearly. And it is wiser to test the App's popularity before investing.

Let us compare and list out a few features for each platform and then conclude.

Market Share

The iOS operating system (OS) is used in only one manufacturer that is Apple. But Android operating system is used in a wide range of brands. With the influx of many affordable mobile phones that run on Android OS, there is a huge share of the android users in the market. iOS on all the Apple products, as we all know is expensive and is not easily affordable.

In this category, it is safe to conclude that Android has a wider reach in most of the parts worldwide.
Demography and OS version update

The findings in the market share point to the audience of your business. The demography of your target audience matters. If most of your business is expected from Asia or parts of Africa, then Android is a better choice. If most of your target audience resides in USA, then it is iOS.

Research also shows that very small percentage of Android users go in for the OS updates regularly. But the iOS users are always updated with the latest OS. Then, App incompatibility with older versions is not a problem in case of iOS devices. It might look like iOS is easier to develop for. Having said that there are cost factors involved in developing on both the platforms.

Cost Factor

To develop an App on either of the platforms is an expensive and time-consuming task. There are many technical factors that will lead you to make a better choice in this iOS vs. Android squabble.
An Android app can be developed on any laptop or PC, but for the iOS a Mac book is a pre-requisite.
The software language used in Android (Java or Kotlin) are compatible with each other. But the software languages in iOS (Objective-C or Swift) have reported glitches in compatibility.

With more device fragmentation in the Android devices, the cost of development also goes high. There is less fragmentation in iOS and hence less time and effort required for iOS development.
 But don't decide yet!

Conclusion

The decision to choose the platform for your App should include a lot of other factors as well. Discuss your requirements with a good mobile application development company to help you decide. With cost and various other factors like launching the App and revenue generation worked out, go for the best.
